Steel Band

Steel Band Classes are returning to Asheville!

Have you ever wanted to play steel drums? This is your chance! No experience is necessary- anyone is welcome to join, regardless of musical background.

Steel drums were invented in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1940’s, making them the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th Century! We will learn a variety of music, from the traditional socas and calypsos of Trinidad, to today’s pop music. Get ready to dance and have a good time, while enjoying the sweet sound of steel drums. Weekly classes will be followed by a performance at the end of the session.

Meet Your Teacher:
Diana Loomer is the director of the Steely Pan Steel Band at Appalachian State University. She has been playing and teaching steel drums for over 10 years. Steel drums are her passion, and she would love to share this music with you!

Here is a video from our most recent concert, after only six classes!

And here is a video from our very first concert!
The kids' class is first, followed by an adult class (which performed two world premieres of brand new pieces!)
